Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Penn. – Coltin Borthwick and Dominic Boggiano scored a combined nine goals to help   lead the Panther offense to a 14-9 victory over Pittsburgh in their first game of the season tonight. Bill Linhardt's strong performance in net helped DU preserve a one-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter to put DU on top of the CCLA at 1-0 . After a day of rest in Pennsylvania, the men's lacrosse team will face George Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Coltin Borthwick gave DU an early advantage on the road with a goal two minutes into the first quarter but Pitt managed to tie it up just a few minutes later to put the pressure back on Chris Gervat and his offense to make the next move. With less than four minutes remaining, Daniel Hume and Borthwick both scored putting Davenport in the lead 3-1. Pittsburgh managed to respond with two minutes left but Nathaniel Adkins gave DU one more goal just before the end of the first quarter.

Jack Turcotte fed Dominic Boggiano a pass in the first minute of the second quarter which Dom immediately turned into a man-up goal to give them a solid 5-2 lead. Five minutes later Pitt started a string of goals that would bring them back into the game and make it a 5-5 but the Davenport offense didn't stress and in a matter of minutes Borthwick and Adkins would both find the back of the net again to end the half with a score of 7-5.

Pittsburgh was able to score a critical goal in the early minutes of the third to once again make it a one goal game only to see two freshmen make the next big move for DU when Graham Pickett whipped a pass at CJ Bush who fired it into the net, effectively giving him his first goal as a member of the men's lacrosse team in his first regular season game as a Panther. Pitt kept the game close two goals that tied the game 8-8 halfway through the third quarter. Borthwick added one last goal in the third to put DU on top after three.

Borthwick would strike again fifteen seconds into the fourth, followed by a Boggiano goal tyally that gave DU its momentum back. Pitt scored its final goal of the game with eight minutes left to give them a shot but Boggiano's next two goals, along with Humes second goal of the night, stopped them in their tracks until the fourth quarter was over.

Gervat and the rest of the DU men's lacrosse coaches were pleased with the way their players fought until the end for this win, and had only love for Linhardt who really made tonight's 14-9 victory over Pittsburgh possible. The players and coaches have a full day in Pittsburgh tomorrow to rest and prepare for George Washington University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
