GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After four lead changes within the final 2:15, Siena Heights got a layup with 14 seconds left but
Kia Frazier's layup with 4.3 left lifted the second-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to a 75-74 edging victory over No. 16 Siena Heights to clinch its fifth straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament championship in front of a roaring crowd at the Student Center Tuesday night. Both teams' seasons are not over just yet as they will head to Sioux City, Iowa, for the NAIA Division II National Tournament beginning next week.
The Panthers and Saints will learn their place in the bracket Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST.
Kayleigh VanKeulen had a key performance off the bench leading four Panthers (31-1) in double figures with 16 points, following by
Alison Bouman's 15,
Brittany Johnson's 12 and
Tiesha Stokes 11. Davenport shot 50 percent (29-for-58) from the floor while holding the Saints (25-8) to 44.4 percent (28-for-63).
Although Siena Heights' Sierra Calhoun led the effort for the Saints with 21, Alexxis Knannlein finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the game's only double-double. Grace Howrigon also finished the evening with 17 points.
Trailing 6-2 nearly four minutes into the contest, the Saints used a 7-0 run to grab its first lead. Although Siena Heights built a four-point lead with 13:25 left, the Panthers built a 7-0 rhythm of their own thanks to back-to-back layups by
Alison Bouman and a 3-pointer by
Brittany Johnson.
Davenport led by as many as 12, when
Alex Law's shot from behind the arc gave the Panthers a 34-22 lead. But that deficit would be cut down to two as the Saints used a 13-3 momentum to head into intermission trailing 37-35.
Both teams combined for 11 3-pointers in the opening period. Davenport made six in its nine attempts and Siena Heights went 5-for-11. The Panthers finished the first half shooting 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the field while holding the Saints to 41.2 percent (14-for-34).
Bouman led the way with eight points, all inside the paint.
Tiesha Stokes put six points early in the first half before foul trouble forced her to sit on the bench for the remainder of the period.
Siena Heights took advantage of a couple of Davenport mistakes to take a 38-37 lead. The Panthers had to dig themselves out of a hole when the Saints had an 11-point run to take a 54-47 lead.
Davenport bounced back from the struggles and ignited a 20-2 run in the span of 6:15 to take a 67-56 lead. Johnson led the effort with eight points followed by Bouman with seven.
