GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's basketball team will wrap up 2021 with a home game on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 6 PM against Cornerstone University.
• This will be the first meeting in just over two years between the former WHAC foes and city rivals. Davenport and Cornerstone have a rich history against each other and will be meeting for the 33rd time on Thursday at the DU Student Center. Davenport has not played an opponent more than 33 times in their history. Madonna and Concordia (MI) are the other schools DU has faced 33 times.
• The last meeting between the two teams occurred on Dec. 18, 2019 and the Panthers won big 97-47 at Mol Arena. DU outscored the Golden Eagles 23-8 in the first quarter and did not look back. The Panthers won their 10th straight in the series and six players scored in double figures for Davenport including
Toni Grace and
Scout Nelson who each poured in 15 points. Grace went 4-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-6 at the free throw line in 26 minutes. Nelson went 5-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe in 21 minutes. The Panthers recorded an incredible 20 steals in the game as Cornerstone coughed it up 29 times. DU scored 41 of their 97 points off turnovers. Rebekah Crosby led the Golden Eagles with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Cornerstone shot just 1-of-17 from the arc and were 32.2 percent overall for the contest.
• Cornerstone comes into the game with a 3-11 overall record and they are 1-6 in the WHAC. This will be their eighth road game of the season with their lone road win coming 72-64 on Dec. 11 at Lourdes. The Golden Eagles are in the midst of a daunting nine-game road trip and Thursday's game is the fourth in that stretch. CU is averaging 62.4 points per game this season and shooting 35.7 percent overall from the floor. The team is also shooting 66.4 percent at the foul line and averaging 12.4 free throw attempts per game. Mackenzie Stien is leading the team with 13.4 points per game and shooting 45.1 percent from the floor. Olivia Kubik is averaging 9.2 points and converting on 80 percent of her free throws.
