ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport track and field squads kicked off the new year on Saturday at the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open. The Panthers had a total of 12 top-5 finishes on the men's side and eight top-5 finishes on the women's side. There were no team scores in this event.
The highlighted performances included
Isaiah Schafer in the shot put and
Ethan Flores in the 60-meter hurdles. Schafer won the event with a toss of 56' 7.25" and in the process hit an NCAA qualifying mark. It was not as far as his mark of 59' 3" back in December which is currently fourth best in NCAA Division II. Schafer also placed sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 58' 7.5" and hit another NCAA provisional mark. Flores would finish second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.11 and was six one-hundredths of a second behind Makiyah Smallwood of GVSU. He also hit a NCAA provisional mark which is currently 11th best in Division II.
Colin Grady was victorious in the long jump in the distance of 22' 8" and was nearly two feet better than second place finisher Elijah Wallace of Cornerstone.
