GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was a very positive opening weekend in St. Louis, Mo. for the Davenport women's basketball team as they split a pair of games against Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis out of the GLVC. DU had their chances in the season opener at Maryville before falling 70-59 on Friday. They rebounded nicely with a 62-55 win at UMSL to even their season record at 1-1. This weekend, a pair of GMAC schools in Findlay (1-1) and Tiffin (2-1) come to the DU Student Center to continue non-conference play.
● Maryville 70, Davenport 59 (Nov. 11)
The season opener came down to the fourth quarter at Maryville last Friday afternoon and the Saints made the plays down the stretch for an 11-point win over the Panthers outscoring them 21-12 in the final 10 minutes. The Panthers led 30-24 at halftime but were outscored 46-29 in the second half. Davenport had their biggest lead at 37-28 in the third quarter but Maryville started to convert on offense and finished the final 6:21 of the quarter with 21 points to take a 49-47 lead into the fourth quarter. The biggest stats in this one were turnovers and free throws. The Panthers did not take care of the ball with 25 turnovers compared to just eight by the Saints. Maryville scored 22 points off those turnovers. Maryville also finished 22-of-28 at the free throw line while Davenport had just five attempts and didn't attempt a free throw until early in the fourth quarter. Lillee Gustafson had her third career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Mary Liedel in her debut at Davenport led the team with 16 points.
● Davenport 62, Missouri-St. Louis 55 (Nov. 12)
Head coach Shonda Sanders earned her first win at Davenport as the Panthers used a big fourth quarter to win for the first time on the road in the regular season in 20 chances. DU outscored the Tritons 22-9 in the final 10 minutes. Ellie Toney led the team with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and connected on 3-of-5 from the arc. Gustafson added a career-high 16 points on 5-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds, two steals and a block in 30 minutes. Scout Nelson scored eight points off the bench in 22 minutes. Makenna Bryant scored six points and had a career-high three steals in 12 minutes. Davenport made 15-of-20 at the free throw line and committed nine fewer turnovers than the opener. UMSL committed 23 turnovers and Davenport outscored the Tritons 31-14 in points off turnovers.
