ASHLAND, Ohio - The Davenport baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision on Saturday at No. 17 Ashland in the middle game of a three-game weekend series. The Panthers saw themselves trailing 5-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but fought back with four runs to tie the game.
Carson Price launched a three-run home run to left center and
Michael Tchavdarov followed that with a solo blast to right field.
The Eagles would then scored the final two runs with one in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings for their 12th win of the season. Ryan Shimek had the game-winning hit with a home run to center in the sixth inning off DU starter
Jerad Berkenpas. A throwing error would allow the seventh inning insurance run to score as the Panthers did commit two errors on the day.
Berkenpas tossed 5.2 innings and allowed 11 hits and six runs with a walk and strikeout.
Jack Snow had a solid relief effort going 2.1 innings and allowing three hits and no earned runs with a strikeout. Ashland made contact all day with just the two strikeouts. Meanwhile, Davenport struck out 12 times against three different Ashland pitchers. Drew Becker got the start but only threw two innings. John Essig in 3.1 innings gave up both home runs and five runs with seven strikeouts. Ethan Stevens did not strike out a batter but did get the win improving to 2-0. He went 1.1 innings and allowed a hit and walk. Justin Dyksma got his third save of the year going the final 2.1 innings with no hits and two punchouts.
