UNIV. CENTER, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team had a tough battle against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday as the Panthers took game one 4-3 and then fell 5-3 in the nightcap. The Panthers nearly took both games and led in game two until the bottom of the eighth inning before giving up two runs.
Carson Fischer was finally rewarded for a quality start with his second win of the season. He hasn't been given much run support in his starts but got just enough in game one. Fischer went six innings and allowed three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. In the seven-inning game, the bullpen took it from there in the final inning.
Brayden Flanders faced two batters with a walk and groundout.
Jack Snow struck out his only batter he faced looking on a 3-2 pitch for the second out.
Tyler Kapa got the final out and his second save of the year with a strikeout of Austin Schweiger to end the game.
Anthony Aloisio went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. He had a RBI single in the first inning and the go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning.
Josh Robinson also went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and run scored.
Logan Todd finished 2-for-3 with a home run, double, run and one RBI.
Coltrane Rubner hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Davenport led 3-0 in game two as Robinson drove in the first two runs. He homered to right center in the first inning for a 1-0 lead and then had a RBI single to center in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead.
Zach Hopman had a sacrifice bunt which scored Robinson in the fifth. The Cardinals got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Hayden Jatczak hit a two-run homer to right to make it 3-2. Jatczak tied the game in the seventh inning when he scored on a wild pitch.
Jerad Berkenpas got the start for Davenport and went 5.1 innings of solid pitching. He allowed two earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Jatczak doubled in the seventh inning before scoring and Flanders threw the wild pitch which tied the game in relief of Snow who threw one inning and allowed one run with a walk and two strikeouts. The Panthers went down in order in the top of the eighth to set the stage for the bottom of the eighth. Kapa could not duplicate his success from game one and inherited the bases loaded with one out. He struck out Brandon Schuerer looking on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. However, he walked in the next two runs on six pitches to Jatczak and five pitches to Colin Cornwell for a 5-3 deficit.
Reed Raymond entered in the ninth inning for the Cardinals and
Connor Hnilo doubled to left center with one out. With the potential tying run at the plate, he got a strikeout of
Michael Tchavdarov and a groundout by
Carson Price to end the game. DU had nine hits in the second game as Robinson and Aloisio each had two of those.
Tyler Mosher and
Jared Evans also each had a double in the contest.
The teams will play two more games tomorrow beginning at noon to conclude the season series. SVSU holds a 3-1 lead to this point.
