GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport's women's basketball team kicks off December in GLIAC fashion with two home matchups against Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State. Davenport (0-5) will host SVSU (1-4) on Thursday Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming the Lakers of Lake Superior State (0-5) on Saturday Dec. 6 at 1 p.m.
As a team Davenport has totaled 263 points and is averaging 52.6 per game. The Panthers have also collected 166 rebounds, 48 assists, 47 steals and 21 blocks during non-conference play.
Maddie Geers, Ellie Toney and Kayla Covington have started all five games for the Panthers. Hannah Schroeder has added four starts, while Reese Polega has three and Anna Axtell has two. Nevaeh Williams made her 2025 season debut on Nov. 26 against Malone after returning from injury. The redshirt junior finished with five assists, seven steals and seven points in 32 minutes. Davenport enters GLIAC play with two players averaging double figures. Geers leads at 12.6 points per game and Toney follows with 10.4. Both also lead the Panthers on the boards with Toney at 6.2 rebounds per game and Geers at 5.2.
Scouting the Opponents
Saginaw Valley State
- Davenport trails the all-time series 14-5. The Panthers split with the Cardinals last season, earning a 61-59 win on Dec. 7, 2024 before falling 78-47 on Feb. 20, 2025.
- SVSU averages 57.4 points, 39.4 rebounds and 11.6 assists per game while shooting 36.1 percent from the field, 19.8 percent from three and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line.
- Three Cardinals average more than 10 points per game: Megan McCalla at 13.0, Lydia Meredith at 12.5 and Kaitlyn Geurink at 11.8. Lainey Yater leads the team in assists with 4.2 per game. Meredith, McCalla and Geurink also pull down more than five rebounds per game. Meredith leads the group with 7.5 per game.
- Meredith was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 24. McCalla was selected to the Preseason All-GLIAC Second Team.
- SVSU was picked to finish seventh in the 2025-26 GLIAC preseason poll. Head coach Jenny Pruett enters her seventh season with the program and is joined by returning assistant coaches Rob McDonald in his fourth season and Ashley Wellman in her second season. The staff also adds Gabriel Wallaker, who begins her first season with the Cardinals.
Lake Superior State
- Davenport and Lake Superior State are tied 7-7 in the all-time series. The teams split their meetings in both the 2024-25 and 2023-24 seasons. Most recently, LSSU claimed a 60-58 win on Jan. 9, 2025 before Davenport answered with a 20-point victory on Feb. 8, 2025.
- The Lakers average 64.6 points, 36.8 rebounds, 11.8 assists, 5.6 steals and 3.4 blocks per game. They are shooting 38.9 percent from the field, 25.2 percent from three and 67.0 percent from the free-throw line.
- LSSU returns senior Grace Bradford of Maple City, Mich. Bradford was the 2023 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors in both her sophomore and junior seasons. She has also been named GLIAC Player of the Week multiple times during her career.
- Bradford, Dara Capaldi and Clare Conzelmann all average double figures, with Bradford leading at 15.8 points per game. Bradford also leads the Lakers with 10.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the field and 76.5 percent from the line. She also leads the team with 1.0 block per game.
- Head coach Grace Howrigon enters her second season leading the program and is joined by returning assistant coaches Terrell Modest and Alix Carter.
