Shilling sets school record in the 1,500 meters to highlight GVSU Early Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davenport track and field teams competed at the Grand Valley State Early Meet with a majority of the events happening on Friday. Nik Shilling had the premier performance as he was able to set the school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.88. He broke the mark set by Tyler Guggemos at this same meet last year.
 
Marcus Nystrom finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14 and Jaden Herrick was sixth with a time of 15.34. Lucas Van Meter and Guggemos finished third and fourth respectively in the 800 meters. Van Meter ran 1:55.71 and Guggemos ran 1:55.95. Garrett Melling finished third in the 3,000 steeplechase with a PR record of 9:35.25. It was also the second-best time in school history. James Horn had a PR in the hammer throw and won the open division with a mark of 174' 2". Brayden Green competing in the long jump finished fourth with a best jump of 22' 9.25".
 
Ella Baryo ran the second-fastest time at DU in the 1,500 meters just missing the school record with a time of 4:39.52, which was also a PR time. Julia Tuuri finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.85. Sidney Heugel finished second in the pole vault with a season-best performance of 11' 7". Bronte Hodson won the javelin with the fourth-best throw in school history at 114' 11" and set a PR. Jayla Procter in Division I was able to finish sixth with a throw of 37' 6.5" in the shot put. Maria Da Cunha competed in the 100 hurdles and was seventh with a time of 16.78.
