Final Three Weeks: Panthers Set Sights on Parkside, Roosevelt

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Last week, the Panthers split their games, falling 67-46 to Wayne State before bouncing back with a 55-46 victory over Purdue Northwest.

Against Wayne State, the Warriors faced Davenport prior to continuing their winning streak, which included handing the nation's top-ranked Grand Valley State their first loss of the season in a close 78-77 contest. The senior from Corunna, Mich., led DU in scoring with 14 points, adding five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Nevaeh Williams chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Earlier in the season, Davenport had fallen to Wayne State 68-59 on January 10, giving the Warriors the edge in the overall series.

In the win over Purdue Northwest, the Pride held the lead through the first three quarters but managed just three points in the final period. Davenport seized the opportunity, scoring 17 points in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. Multiple Panthers contributed offensively, showcasing a true team effort. Williams led with 12 points, while Taaria Pehi-Kupa, Toney, Anna Axtell, Maya Mitchell, and Maddie Geers each added five or more points.

Scouting the Opponents 
Parkside 
  • The Rangers enter the matchup at 11–11 overall and 6–8 in GLIAC play, coming off back-to-back losses to Roosevelt (59–53) and No. 18 Ferris State (82–69).
  • In their previous matchup on January 24th, Parkside claimed the victory over the Panthers, 76–58.
    • For the Panthers, Toney added 19 points and five rebounds, while Geers led the team on the boards with seven and also chipped in 12 points.
    • Four Rangers reached double figures for Parkside, led by Katie Hamill, Lillie Petersen, Cassidy Arni, and Jaelyn Derlein.
  • Currently, Katie Hamill leads Parkside in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game, with Cassidy Arni close behind at 14.1. Alli Hampel tops the team in field goal percentage at 47.7%, while Peighton Nelson leads in total assists with 106, averaging 5.0 per game—good for first in the GLIAC. Lillie Petersen is pulling down 7.6 rebounds per game, ranking third in the conference.
  • Against ranked opponents, Parkside is 0–5, though they've remained competitive in most games. On January 5th, the Rangers fell 96–90 to No. 18 Ferris State and 56–48 to No. 17 Northern Michigan. Earlier in the season, they also came up short against Minnesota State University Mankato, 85–73, on November 29.
Roosevelt 
  • The Lakers enter the week at 6–15 overall and 5–9 in GLIAC play. RU is coming off a split week, earning a 59–53 win over Parkside before falling to No. 18 Ferris State, 81–53.
  • In their most recent meeting on January 22, the Panthers secured a 73–57 victory over Davenport.
    • Toney led the way with 20 points, while Geers and Axtell each added 18. As a team, Davenport shot 46.9% from the field.
    • Marie Outlay led the team with 18 points, while Isabella Pitta added 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
  • Isabella Pitta is averaging 9.0 rebounds per game, ranking second in the GLIAC, while also leading the team in field goal percentage at 41.1%. Kelly Boyle is averaging 2.5 made field goals per game, good for fourth in the conference. Marie Outlay leads the Lakers in scoring at 12.8 points per game and has also tallied 27 blocks and 87 steals.
  • Against ranked opponents, Roosevelt turned in one of its strongest performances of the season, narrowly falling to No. 17 Northern Michigan, 83–82.
